Vithaya LAXAVADY outplayed Sengdeun 2-1 in the finals of the men singles to win the 3rd Lao Ford City tennis tournament at the Vientiane Tennis Club on the Friday.
Vithaya, 15, spearheads a new generation of youngsters who are looking forward to taking part in the 25th SEA GAMES in Vientiane 2009, Although he was not successful in the 24th SEA GAMES in Thailand last year. Vithaya benefited from the experience he gained.
More than 90 tennis players, mostly from Vientiane, took part in the tournament, held to mark the 59th Lao People Amy Day on January 20. Tfhe tournament took place from January 5 to February 1. Lao Ford City was the major sponsor of the third annual tournament, providing financial backing of 37 milion kip. The tournament featured two men is double categories, for those under 50 and for those over 50. Other categories included the boy's U-12 and U-15 singles. There was also a mixed double division and an open categories in men's singles. One of the goals of the tournament is to raise the standards of young players considering competing in the 2009 SEA GAMES. We hope that Lao Ford City will support our young tennis players at these game, said the president of the Lao Tennis Federation, Mr. Somphong Mongkhonvilay. He said that tennis had gained in popularity among lower and uper secondary school students. as could be seen from the number entering the tournament this year. More young players are also entering the Pepsi and Beerlao tennis tournament each year.
The winners and runners-up in the open categories in the men's singles, double and over 50 divisions received commemorative cups. those placed first and second in the junior divisions received cash prizes and cups.
